Should you rely on Dr.Google to answer your child’s skin-related needs?
Dr. Google is as real as daylight and isnβt like the normal physician in your local hospitals. He, takes in your questions and answers them within the shortest time imaginable. What you once knew as muscle twitches now becomes muscle fasciculation while the one remedy you had on hand becomes part of an infinite list of suggestions.
A 2021 JAMA Network Open survey of 5,000 participants found that in any given year, almost two-thirds of American adults go online to search for health information for themselves or for others.
Give me an honest answer. When confronted with new symptoms, do you google to understand why are you ill and/or whether and where you should get care? Did you know, that such searches may be harmful because they may facilitate misdiagnosis and inappropriate triage?
And are you willing to take that risk when it comes to the health of your little ones?
The internet can easily snowball⦠one simple search topic quickly branches out into several different topics, some complimentary and some conflicting.
Add in layers of repetitive, vague, and inapplicable information (especially from inexperienced sources), and now youβre just buried under a pile of overwhelming and confusing open tabs.
When it comes to our childβs health, we cannot rely on Dr. Google. For example, all skin molds are not skin cancer, right?
I am an Integrative & Holistic Dermatologist by profession and can assure you out of my 10+ years of experience, that a particular skin presentation can have a minimum of 2-3 differential diagnoses. This means multiple conditions have the possibility of a similar presentation but each one has to be taken care of in an entirely different manner.
Letβs for instance take the example of an itchy rash limited over your childβs arm. Based on the information provided above, multiple things come to mind. Is the lesion progressing or is it stable since you last noticed it? Does it involve other parts of the body? Does it get relieved by the application of a moisturiser and/or compresses? Does it aggravate during the warmer or cooler temperatures?Β Does anyone in the family have a similar presentation over the skin? Is it associated with other symptoms?
The fact is, this kind of an itchy presentation can be due to eczema, a fungal infection or an autoimmune condition such as psoriasis! While one condition might get relieved by the application of topical steroids, the other might cause a rebound flare!
Following guidance from someone who has years of experience will not only give you the precise answers & results youβre looking for faster, but it will also give you years of tips & tricks that may not otherwise be found from ambiguous Google searches.
It is important for an experienced eye to assess and confirm the condition. But we are well aware, that it isnβt easy to get a specialists appointment quickly. Moreover, we arenβt really prepared to absorb and understand the intricacies of a condition when our health care provider discusses it with us at the spur of the moment.
This is why I created Baby SkinWiseβ’- the Worldβs 1st Audiovisual Skincare guide for parents and caretakers to help you learn the βWhyβsβ and βWhatβsβ of a condition before dvelving into the βHow toβ part of the treatment. It teaches you how to holistically manage common skin & hair conditions that affect all children, confidently and safely in the comforts of your home.
It is simply a matter of timeβ¦since kids get affected by a variety of things right from rashes, allergies, infestations, alopecias, and hair loss to name a few. If you are aware and equipped with the knowledge about a particular condition your child might acquire and how you can manage them effectively, you have saved yourself and your child from hours of unnecessary suffering and anxiety related to it.
Trust me, nobody knows your child better than you do…not me and not any doctor in the world. Being armed with the right tools and resources will give you the advantage of understanding your childβs skin needs and eliminating them from the root cause.
The fact is that Dr. Google operates on terms that totally contradict normal medical procedure. He doesnβt ask any questions because you are the one who asks all the question and he doesnβt give any prescriptions but an infinite list of suggestions! Most importantly, he wonβt give you a diagnosis but an assumption based on what you think you or your child has. Think about it…
I want you to make an informed decision. But remember, I am there to support you every step of the way.
