DIY Homemade Non-toxic Lip Balm Recipe
Research shows that whatever you apply over the skin does get absorbed to some extent. The amount of absorption is very variable but it does take place.
There is a possibility that what you apply over your lips can get ingested. Hence, I am always on the lookout for a safe and effective lip balm.
This homemade lip balm recipe is the most basic and one of my all-time favorites, ever since I tried my hand at DIY skincare recipes.
It is super easy to prepare and moisturizes the lips very well.
I could not believe I did not start making my lip balms sooner since I like mine better than most store-bought ones due to the following facts:
- I know the quality of the ingredients that I use ( and I source the best raw material available from here)
- I can play around with the consistency and flavors according to my liking
Buying Organic Non-toxic Lip Balm

But if you want to create your lip balm, then you’ll enjoy making my easy-peasy lip balm recipe.
Base Ingredients for DIY Homemade Lip Balm
I have sourced all my ingredients from mountain rose herbs. They carry excellent quality products but I am aware they charge for shipping, hence I have linked the sources from Amazon making sure they are from reputable sellers.
Optional add-ins:
- Raw honey
- Organic vanilla extract
- Organic Essential oil of your choice.
- Vitamin E oil
Important- The instructions
- These lip balms if kept in a cool, dry place can last for up to about 2 years. It is believed that vitamin E oil helps extend the shelf life even further. Remember it is an optional add-on and does not suit everyone.
- Consistency of this lip balm? This will make a medium-firm lip balm. If you prefer a firmer version, you can add more beeswax, up to double the recommended amount. If you prefer a smoother and more oily lip balm, you can reduce the amount of beeswax.
- Can you use other alternatives to the ingredients we just used? Yes! You can have a variety of different flavors and textures. Mix and match but be sure you know what you are looking for.
- Essential Oil Safety- I have seen a lot of cases of contact dermatitis or allergies with essential oils. Essential oils are very concentrated and not every essential oil is safe to use on the skin or lips directly either.
The quality of the essential oil and the amount you use is of prime importance. I source mine from Plant therapy. This set contains all the essential and beautiful scents that make great lip balm flavors. I would avoid the lemon oil for DIY recipes.
Remember a few like lime, bergamot, and a few essential oils can cause photosensitivity if too much is used before sun exposure. It can lead to severe contact dermatitis or photoallergic response (swelling, redness, and lip damage.) Hence, be mindful.
