DIY Pumpkin Face Mask for Glowing Skin: Using Leftover Pumpkin Puree
My heart aches whenever I see dozens of pumpkins thrown away yearly, though I am aware that there is only so much you can eat… think pumpkin soup, pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice latte, vegetable medley… the list is endless.
Your best bet will be to puree all the leftovers and freeze them in small batches so that you can enjoy them year-round. But if you were wondering about using the modest pumpkin for facial rejuvenation, I must admit, it is an excellent idea!
Plus, why bother getting store-bought pumpkin masks when you can make a safe and effective one at home? (unless you are really pressed for time…even then, you’ll agree this recipe is so simple but effective, you’ll keep making it once you see your skin glow)
Having years of experience, experimenting, and testing skin care recipes, I’m sharing my favorite pumpkin face mask recipe to help you glow, especially when the weather starts to roughen up during this time.
Pumpkin Face Mask Benefits
This simple, 4-ingredient Pumpkin Face Mask is a fantastic self-care DIY for all skin types to indulge this season. Made with pumpkin, honey, licorice, and yogurt, this mask helps gently exfoliate, brighten, hydrate, and revitalize the skin. Here are some of the benefits of each ingredient:
Pumpkin – Contains lutein and zeaxanthin, along with enzymes that help naturally exfoliate and hydrate the skin and support it to combat the effects of ultraviolet light. Pumpkins also contain high amounts of antioxidants such as alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, and beta-cryptoxanthin.
Raw honey – has anti-microbial and wound-healing properties. It also helps the skin absorb and retain moisture. Honey forms an excellent base esp if you have dry or acne prone skin.
Licorice – contains glycyrrhizin, a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties (think: less redness and irritation for inflamed, irritated skin). It also contains Glabridin, which helps diminish any dark spots and hyperpigmentation, inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase ( a key enzyme in the melanin production pathway).
Yogurt- Regular or Greek yogurt contains lactic acid- a mild but excellent exfoliating agent that helps remove dead skin cells without the harshness of physical scrubbing agents.
Pumpkin Face Mask Recipe
Makes enough for 1-2 face masks
INGREDIENTS:
- 1/3 cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling!)
- 1 tbsp raw honey
- 1 tsp/ 1 capsule licorice root powder
- 1 tbsp yogurt/curd (you can use milk if you have very dry skin)
PREPARATION:
- In a small bowl, stir the pumpkin puree, honey, licorice powder, and yogurt until thoroughly combined.
- Apply a thin layer to the face.
- Relax and leave on the skin for 10-15 minutes, then rinse well to remove.
- Store the leftover face mask in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Enjoy!!
*If you have very sensitive skin, consider omitting licorice, as it may irritate. Feel free to apply this over the neck and other parts of the body (especially the exposed areas of the arms and legs) if you are treating yourself to a spa day at home.
