Hearty Beef Burgers- Learn to make it Texas-style!
If there is one thing that caught my attention immediately after my move to Texas was the huge food portions that we were served; every time happily with a wink in the eye saying- Texas Style!
Pardon my ignorance, but it was then my google eyes discovered that Texas is known for everything being big! The state is definitely big (in fact the 2nd largest in the United States), but I’m not just talking about food and area here. Whether it’s the buildings or cars… Texans are known to do things on the large side. And I salute them for it.
While barbecue is their niche in the food arena, burgers aren’t left too far behind. With plenty of local farms providing the best pasture-raised meat you can find (& I truly believe we should be supporting them wholeheartedly since they are all doing a fantastic job at giving us true, unadulterated produce), it is hard to resist making your own version of the popular foods here.
Sharing my version of a simple hearty beef burger that can be whipped up in minutes if you have the ground beef patties ready. Even perfect for a quick date night recipe provided your better half has a hearty appetite like ours!?
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef (pasture-raised as always)
- 1 shallot
- 1 jalapeno
- 1 tomato
- 1 garlic
- juice of half a lemon
- organic cheese (raw will be yum)
- organic unsweetened ketchup (optional)
- organic stone-ground mustard sauce (optional)
- 2 pairs of burger buns
- Organic turmeric root powder
- Organic red chili powder
- Garam masala
- Sea salt
- Organic butter
- Organic coconut oil
- Lots of love 🙂
Preparation
Step 1– Thaw the ground beef and shape them into 2 large patties. (Alternatively, you can get hold of ready-shaped patties as I did for this time, or prepare your patties in advance)
Step 2- Marinate the beef patties with the spices according to your taste preference (i.e. turmeric, red chili powder, garam masala, freshly cracked black pepper, and sea salt) and let them sit for at least 30 mins for the best flavors. In the meanwhile finely chop the garlic and cut the rest of the vegetables into long and round slices.
Step 3- Heat your cast iron pan with a tablespoon of coconut oil. (It is fine even if you choose not to add the oil as the meat releases its own fat, but I like having a thin oil coating at the bottom just to be on the safer side).
Step 4- Cook the patties first on low-medium heat to cook the meat to your liking (I cook it for approximately 5 minutes on each side) and on a slightly higher flame to get that beautiful brown crust on the surface.
Step 5- Remove the patties to a separate dish and add the veggies into the same pan having that yummy fat that has oozed out.
Step 6- Saute the vegetables, till the tomatoes become soft and juicy, shallots become slightly caramelized and the pepper retains a bit of its crunch. (Please forgive me if I sound too particular but I am just giving a rough guide to get the best texture and flavors out of the ingredients). Don’t forget to add salt to the veggies too whilst sauteeing them.
Step 7- Apply a generous helping of butter to your burger buns, place the beef pattie over the buttered base and squeeze fresh lime over it.
Step 8- Finally, add a layer of sauteed vegetables, a slice of cheese, some ketchup, and mustard sauce (optionally) but I recommend it since it gives that complete restaurant-style taste & feel.
The burger tastes delicious by itself with the heavenly taste of the meat, its fat, the soft and crunchy vegetables, the freshness of lime, and the buttered bread.
You can serve it additionally with some chips and more ketchup.
Hope you enjoy having this deliciousness.
Sending lots of hearty warm wishes your way.
