The best self-help books that you must read
Just like you, I used to roll my eyes at the idea of a “self-help” book, wondering why I must spend time reading the predictable advice everyone has to give on how to lead my best life. My views changed with time and I hope yours will too after you read through my list and give it a try.
Groucho Marx once said, “I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.”
With all due respect to Mr. Marx, my mommy could well have been the author of that quote as well! ? She was never fond of the television set and never shied away from calling it ‘the idiot box. I was quite the opposite, the complete TV addict until I realized the futility and number of hours wasted and entered into the beautiful world of books. Since then, it has been my dream to have a library in the house, where all our favorites are preserved and hopefully passed down for generations to come.
To begin with, today I have compiled a small list of 5 of my favorite self-help books that you just want to possess and keep as yours so that you can open a random page, read it aloud to yourself or your loved one, and close it back feeling empowered and energized.
This was probably the first self-help book I was introduced to when my ambitious self dreamt of conquering all feats that I had set my heart to. It outlines the law of attraction, a concept the author claims can change or redirect a person’s entire life and I couldn’t agree more. Reflecting back on yesteryears, I truly believe that I had wished for most things earnestly and they did manifest, just not probably at the time when I really wanted them to! But it was the right time the universe had chosen and we can only connect the dots backward, isn’t it!?
This is one of my current favorites, not only because it is so simply and lucidly written but it reminds me of the lovely memories I have with my sister opening a page each time I felt low and just reading out a paragraph from it to motivate me.
This book begins with a beautiful Japanese proverb- “Only staying active will make you want to live a hundred years.” The people of Japan truly believe that everyone has an ikigai – a reason to jump out of bed each morning. Inspiring and comforting, this book will show you how to leave urgency behind, find your purpose, nurture friendships and throw yourself into your passions.
The author describes 7 fundamental habits to guide one toward an independent, successful, and fulfilling life. Using psychological principles, this book begs to be opened over and over again, refreshing the reader with life mantras that will lead them to greatness.
4. “The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business” by Charles Duhig
In this book, Charles Duhigg has presented why habits exist and what we can do to change them. Now you will agree, that it is almost impossible to let go of a habit, even if they seem to be harmful at times. I often used to find myself saying that I have been doing or thinking a particular way for years and changing now is of no use. But my little self-reflecting self knew that was not true. It is indeed never too late and this book helps to realize that the key to reaching any of our goals lies with the understanding of how habits are formed and helps change them in order to transform your life.
5. “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” by Mark Manson
Now the conservative me that I am, I was definitely not comfortable with the title, and mind you the entire book does not shy away from it either. Nonetheless, I have to applaud the author for speaking his mind so truthfully, that you cannot but agree with what he has to say. If you are someone who does not believe in the norm of “positivity” in self-help books then you’ll definitely enjoy reading this book. In his book, Manson encourages his readers to recognize what is worth caring about and to adjust perspectives based on their goals.
These are just a few of my recommendations for you to begin a beautiful, self-transforming journey in case you decide to embark upon one. Even if you aren’t the one who sits and reads, do give it a try. You will definitely put to use something and benefit in some way. I’ll leave you with one final quote that will convince you to give reading these books a try in case you aren’t still convinced.
“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.”
― Charles W. Eliot
