The Best & the Simplest DIY Anti-Dandruff Hair Oil I Dermatologist Recommendations
The biggest dilemma I have often seen my clients debate about is whether they should oil their hair when they have dandruff.
There is a lot of conflicting advice, and I have personally seen a lot of hair oils being promoted that either promise a cure or have a 10-step elaborate preparation process if you choose to go the DIY route.
In this article, I am going to answer whether oiling your hair with dandruff is a good idea, and then I’ll share my simple recipe that actually works and takes only minutes to prepare.
If you choose to listen and see the preparation for yourself, then you’ll enjoy watching this short video.
Is Oiling the Scalp Bad for Dandruff?
The actual answer to this is not a simple yes or no. It actually depends on your oiling practice rather than the oil itself.
If you choose to move around throughout the day after oiling your hair, thinking you are doing good, you are actually doing the contrary!
The oil in your hair will attract all the pollution and more dirt. This will get mixed with the existing dandruff and increase your itchiness.
On the other hand, if you choose not to oil your hair, and your environment is already very dry, like during the winters, then NOT oiling the hair can leave your scalp dry, which in turn can increase the flakiness and itching.
So what should you do?
Find a middle ground. I personally feel it is best to oil the hair for 1-2 hours and then make sure to wash it off with a gentle shampoo.
If you really want to leave the oil longer, then try keeping it overnight. Ensure you wash it off before leaving the house the next morning.
For those who have dandruff, I still recommend oiling for a short time only.
Will oiling the scalp get rid of dandruff?
Oils alone cannot do much to get rid of the dandruff.
Some oils inherently contain ingredients that are anti-fungal, which can help to some extent, but no oil can get rid of it completely until you address the root cause.
Oils essentially improve circulation and moisturize the scalp. This helps to give the scalp some relief from the extreme dryness and flakiness that was occurring in the first place.
My Anti-Dandruff Hair Oil Recipe
My hair oil recipe is pretty straightforward, and it is something that has worked for most of my clients.
Ingredients
Preparation
Add
- 2 tablespoons of coconut oil +
- 2 tablespoons of castor oil +
- 3 drops of lemongrass essential oil +
- 3 drops of tea tree oil
If the coconut oil is solid, warm it using the double boiler method or directly in a stainless steel bowl to melt it.
Alternative oils that can be used over the Scalp
Argan oil/sesame oil/mustard oil, or any other oil, according to your preference and experience, will work in place of coconut oil. I chose coconut oil since it is anti-fungal, easily available, and works for most hair types.
What essential oils are safe to use over the scalp?
When you use essential oils, ensure you use highly pure essential oils.
Don’t ever use essential oils directly on the scalp. Use organic essential oils from reputable brands. I use the ones from Plant Therapy. They are of very good quality and are things that I have experience with.
How to Apply Anti-Dandruff Hair Oil?
- Place a few drops of oil over one area of the scalp at a time.
- Massage the oil into your scalp with your fingertips.
- Leave it on for two to three hours or overnight.
- Wash with a mild shampoo or an anti-dandruff shampoo.
The Verdict
It is important to remember that you won’t see immediate results with your dandruff. You need to combine it with other treatment options.
You first need to assess whether what you are dealing with is dandruff or something else. I explain that in detail in this video.
Make sure you assess the cause of your dandruff and treat it accordingly. But rest assured, your scalp will definitely feel better and less itchy after an oil-head wash treatment.
