What Comedogenic Ingredients should you Avoid if you have Acne Prone skin?
What does the word ‘Comedogenic’ mean?
The term comedogenicity refers to “the potential of various agents to promote abnormal keratinization (hyperkeratinization) and desquamation of follicular epithelium.”
This basically means that comedogenic ingredients are those that have the capacity to block pores and hence contribute to the formation of the first lesion of acne known as comedones (popularly known as blackheads or whiteheads)
There are more than 120 comedogenic ingredients scientifically shown to trigger product acne, also known as acne cosmetica. These ingredients have the capacity to break out acne-prone skin.
Hence, it is important to know which are the notorious ingredients and consequently avoid them since the majority of people with acne are still unknowingly using these pore-cloggers on a daily basis.
Are Oils Comedogenic?
It is worthwhile to remember that natural skincare can (and often does) contain comedogenic ingredients. Most natural products contain comedogenic oils such as coconut oil, almond oil, soybean oil, avocado oil, and olive oil, amongst others mentioned in the list below.
Also, note that most of the carrier oils being used in skincare today have not been tested before. Oils such as argan oil, borage oil, hemp oil, macadamia oil, pumpkin seed oil, rosehip oil, tamanu oil, and walnut oil. These cannot be confirmed as acne-safe, and most tested oils came up as comedogenic. Hence, my recommendation will be to avoid them.
On the other hand, sunflower oil, safflower oil, jojoba oil, squalane, castor oil, and all essential oils have been found to be acne-safe. As we saw before, most oils are comedogenic, but these carrier oils and all essential oils were found to be acne-safe.
Common Comedogenic ingredients Used in Skincare (A-Z)
The ingredient names listed below are quoted from Dr. Fulton’s paper “Comedogenicity and irritancy of commonly used ingredients in skincare products.”Β The complete paper is available below for your perusal. In my opinion, Dr. Fulton’s study is the only comprehensive guide of comedogenic ingredients done to date.
